DIY Headlight Kits vs Professional Restoration

You can buy a headlight restoration kit from any auto store for $20–$40. So why pay a professional? It's a fair question — and the honest answer is that they're solving the problem at very different levels. Here's what actually happens with each.

What a DIY kit does

A typical kit gives you a few sheets of sandpaper, a small tub of polish, and a wipe-on sealant. Used carefully, it can genuinely make hazy headlights look better for a while. The catch is in the details:

  • Hand sanding is uneven.Without a machine, it's very hard to get a uniform finish, which is why DIY results often have visible swirl marks or cloudy patches.
  • The sealant is the weak link. Most kits use a wipe-on coating that's only microns thick. It typically lasts 2–4 months before the yellowing comes back — often faster in Perth's strong UV.
  • It's easy to make it worse.Sand too little and it won't clear; sand too aggressively or unevenly and you can permanently damage the lens.

What professional restoration does

Our process is the same idea — sand, polish, seal — done at a different standard:

  • Progressive wet sanding through multiple grits for an even base, not a rushed single pass.
  • A 2-step machine polishthat removes sanding marks completely and restores deep, uniform clarity. This is the step a kit physically can't replicate.
  • A professional-grade ceramic coatingthat's far more durable than a wipe-on sealant — protection measured in years, not months (up to 2 years depending on sun exposure).

The real comparison: cost over time

A $30 kit that lasts 3 months means you're re-doing the job 3–4 times a year, every year — with mediocre results and your own labour each time. Professional restoration at $120 (or $180 with ceramic) gives you a better finish that lasts, with none of the effort or risk. Over two years, the “cheap” option often costs more in kits alone — and your headlights never look as good.

When DIY is fine

If your car is about to be sold, or the headlights are only lightly hazed and you just want a quick temporary lift, a kit can do the job. For anything you want to actually last — especially in the Perth sun — professional restoration is the better investment.
