Headlight Restoration vs Replacement: Which Is Worth It?
When your headlights go cloudy and yellow, you've got two options: restore the lenses you have, or buy new headlight assemblies. For most cars, the decision is easy once you see the numbers — but there are a few cases where replacement really is the right move. Here's how to tell.
The cost gap is huge
Restoration: from $120 for both headlights at Shinelight, done at your door in about an hour.
Replacement:new OEM headlight units typically cost $800–$2,500+ per side, plus dealership labour to fit and align them. On many modern cars with LED or projector units, it's even more.
That's not a small difference — it's often the price of a service or two versus the price of a small holiday.
When restoration is the right call (about 95% of the time)
If your headlights are yellowed, hazy, cloudy or oxidised on the outside, that damage is on the surface of the polycarbonate lens. Our process — wet sanding, a 2-step machine polish, and an optional ceramic coating — removes that layer and brings the lens back to a clear, like-new finish. The result looks the same as a new lens for a fraction of the cost.
And here's the part most people don't realise: a brand-new lens will start yellowing again in 5–7 years anyway, because the factory UV coating breaks down over time. So replacing isn't a permanent fix — it just resets the clock at 10–20x the price.
When replacement actually makes sense
Restoration works on the lens surface. It can't fix:
- A cracked or broken housing — if the headlight casing itself is damaged.
- Internal moisture or fogging inside the sealed unit.
- A damaged internal reflector (the mirrored surface behind the lens).
If any of those apply, the assembly needs replacing — and we'll tell you honestly rather than take a job that won't give you a good result.
The smart middle path
For the vast majority of Perth cars, restoration plus a ceramic coating gives you new-headlight clarity, protected for up to 2 years, for $180 total. When the coating eventually wears, we simply re-restore at a reduced cost — no need to ever buy new headlights again.
