How Long Does Headlight Restoration Last?

It's the most sensible question to ask before booking: if I get my headlights restored, how long until they go yellow again? The honest answer depends on one main choice — whether you add a ceramic coating — and a few things you can't control, like how much sun your car gets. Here's the full picture.

The two timelines

Restoration without a protective coating: expect clarity to start fading at around 6 months. The restoration itself is excellent, but a bare polycarbonate lens has no UV barrier, so oxidation gradually returns.
Restoration with our ceramic coating: protection extends up to 2 years, depending on sun exposure. The ceramic layer acts as a sacrificial UV barrier, doing the job the factory coating used to do.

That's why our premium package ($180 for both headlights plus ceramic) is the most popular choice — the extra protection more than pays for itself in how long you go between treatments.

What affects how long it lasts

  • Sun exposure. This is the big one. A car parked outside all day in the Perth sun will oxidise faster than one kept in a garage or carport. Perth has some of the strongest UV in the country.
  • Where you park. Garaged or covered overnight = longer-lasting results.
  • Washing habits. Harsh chemical cleaners and abrasive sponges can wear a coating down faster. Gentle washing helps it last.
  • The quality of the original job. A proper machine polish and a real ceramic coating last far longer than a DIY wipe-on sealant, which typically fails in 2–4 months. (More on that in our DIY vs professional guide.)

The best part: it's renewable

Here's what makes restoration such good value — you never have to replace the headlights. When the clarity eventually dulls again, we simply repeat the process at a reduced cost. Compare that to new OEM assemblies at $800–$2,500+ per side, and the maths is obvious.
