Does WD-40 Restore Headlights? The Truth About Sprays and Aerosol Hacks
Search “how to restore headlights” on YouTube or TikTok and within 30 seconds someone will spray WD-40 on a yellowed lens, wipe it off, and call it “restored.” Same story with Pledge furniture polish, Rain-X, Armor All and half a dozen other household aerosols. The before/after looks great. The comments are glowing. And every single one of these hacks is misleading you.
We do headlight restoration full-time in Perth, and we see the aftermath of these tricks every week — customers who tried the spray, thought it worked, and then wondered why their headlights looked worse three months later. Here's exactly what's happening.
Why WD-40 (and every other aerosol hack) looks like it works
A yellowed headlight is a plastic lens whose surface has oxidised and become microscopically rough. Light hits that rough surface and scatters, which is what your eye reads as “cloudy” or “milky.”
When you spray oil (WD-40), wax (Pledge), silicone (Armor All) or a hydrophobic coating (Rain-X) on that rough surface, the liquid fills in the microscopic pits. Suddenly the surface is smooth again — for as long as the liquid stays there. Light passes through instead of scattering, and the headlight looks clearer.
That's not restoration. That's wetting. It's the same reason a road looks blacker when it rains. Nothing has been repaired — you've just poured something over the damage.
How long the “fix” actually lasts
- WD-40:a few days at best. It's a light penetrating oil designed to evaporate. First rain, first car wash, first UV-hot afternoon in Perth and it's gone.
- Pledge / furniture wax:1–2 weeks. Waxes hold better than oils but still burn off in Perth's summer sun in a matter of days.
- Rain-X / hydrophobic sprays:up to a month if you're lucky. Still only masking the damage.
- Armor All / silicone dressings: 2–4 weeks and it attracts dust while it lasts.
Meanwhile the underlying UV damage is still there. Every day the oxidation gets a little deeper. You're not slowing anything down — you're just hiding it between reapplications.
Why these sprays can make it worse
Three problems that don't show up on day one but bite you later:
- They can attack the factory UV coating. Modern headlights ship with a thin protective UV film. WD-40 in particular is a solvent — repeated use softens and strips that film, which is exactly the layer keeping your lens from yellowing faster.
- They trap dirt and grit against the plastic. Oil and silicone stay sticky. Every particle of road dust, pollen and salt (a big deal near Fremantle, Scarborough, Cottesloe) binds to the surface and acts like sandpaper the next time you wipe the headlight.
- They contaminate the surface for proper repair later.When it's time to do the job properly, we have to spend extra time degreasing and prepping a lens that's been sprayed with oil or silicone before we can sand it. Some professional coatings won't bond at all until the contamination is fully lifted.
Toothpaste, baking soda, vinegar — same story
The other viral one is toothpaste. Toothpaste contains a mild abrasive, so scrubbing hard does remove a very thin layer of oxidation — which is why the before/after looks convincing on video. But you're abrading unevenly with a random-grit paste never designed for polycarbonate, and there's no polish or seal after. Results dull in weeks and you've introduced new micro-scratches. Baking soda and vinegar are worse: the acid attacks the UV coating directly.
What actually restores a yellowed headlight
There are only two things that genuinely reverse the damage:
- Physically remove the oxidised layer.Progressive wet sanding through multiple grits — 800, 1500, 2500, 3000 — takes the damaged plastic off entirely. You're not covering the yellow, you're cutting it off.
- Restore optical clarity with a 2-step machine polish. A cutting compound removes the sanding marks, a finishing polish brings the lens back to glass-like clarity. This is the step no spray can replicate — the surface is now genuinely smooth at the microscopic level, not just wet.
Then you seal it. A professional ceramic coating rebuilds the UV protection the factory put on originally, and adds 12–24 months of Perth-sun-proof life. Without a proper seal, even a perfect polish will yellow again in about six months.

Spray it, wipe it, sell it, done. Any other use case — safety, night driving, roadworthy inspection, keeping the car for another year — the spray hurts more than it helps.
